The Latest Facilities for Veterinary Science
The University of Georgia Veterinary Medical Learning Center (VMLC) campus features five buildings that encompass nearly 300,000 square feet.
Facilities
The buildings include:
- VMLC hospital housing of the small animal service areas, clinical pathology, equine, and food animal service areas
- Veterinary Academic Building with classrooms, an auditorium, and seminar/dining space
- Covered outdoor arena for equine lameness evaluation
- Theriogenology and Farm Field Service Building
- Large Animal Isolation Barn
The new, state-of-the-art facility allows UGA to increase student enrollment and keep up with modern medical advances. A design assist team approach was developed to assist the general contractor, throughout the design completion phase to insure that the project remained within budget.
Systems Installed
The installation of the HVAC and plumbing systems began in July 2013. The equipment installed on this project included:

- (1) 170-ton Heat recovery chiller
- (10) Pumps
- (50) Fan coil units
- (32) Exhaust fans
- (2) Cooling towers
- (2) Steam boilers
- (4) Condensing-hot water boilers
- (3) Water heaters
- (1) Domestic water pre-heater
- (300) VAV boxes
- (8) Air handling units
- (11) Energy recovery units
- (14) Infrared heaters
- (8) Blower coils
- (21) Roof hoods
Fabrication
Our company was able to prefabricate 65% of the HVAC and plumbing systems. Prefabrication included:
- Overhead rack piping for HVAC, plumbing, and medical gas systems
- In-wall plumbing rough-in
- Central energy plant piping
- Air handler coil piping
- VAV box reheat coil piping
- Spiral duct systems
The $16,578,910 project was completed on February 5, 2015 with a total of 200,525 man hours. There were two full time safety offers on the job site with no lost time accidents. There were safety observation and near miss plans in place, with a safety drawing incentive done weekly for the crew’s participation in good safety habits. The project also included a goal to achieve LEED certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.
